Meath Cyclist wins Ballinrobe 2 day
Colm Laverty an ex Meath footballer wins the Ballinrobe 2 day making it a
winning weekend for County Meath.
Mayo was humbled by Meath in the football and had also to be content by been
humbled in the cycling by a great ride by a Meath cyclist.
After 3 stages covering 179kms at an average speed of 41.2 kms per hour,
racing was far from easy at the Ballinrobe 2 day.
Pre race favourite Paul Griffin Earl of Desmond struggled to get the scratch
group moving even after race director lowered the handicap time on the
second road stage.
In the morning time trial Mark Dowling set a scorching time for the 7.4k TT
winning it from Paul Griffin with Limerick rider Stephen Teeling Lynch 3rd .
The afternoon stage was again dominated by the C and Lady riders holding of
the scratch riders to the very end even though they had only a 5 min
handicap over the A riders.
Last year's winner Patrick Clarke from Castlebar made a valiant attempt to
retain the Eileen Marrey memorial trophy by jumping across the gap with 3
others going into the 2nd lap of 43k and looked to have the overall sewn up
but found they could not get ride of the C riders.
In the sprint for the line Gerhard Hack of the promoting club Western Lakes
CC won the bunch gallop for the stage whilst as a bonus won the green points
jersey as he had already been up in the points competition, he beat come
back man Derek Cunningham of Bray Wheelers in to 2nd and Frank Barret of
Galway Bay to 3rd.
Paul Griffin won the sprint out of the A and B group some 15 seconds back
on the C group.
For a change the weather remained dry and mostly sunny making for a great
weekend's racing.
Western Lakes would like to thank the Gardai for their road marshalling, the
Red Cross for their Ambulance support and to all the marshalls and drivers
who helped over the weekend, to Josie Quigley and Gannon's bar and
restaurant for the refreshments and a special thanks to the sponsors Marrey
Bikes and Connemara Fisheries.
Here hoping next year's event is bigger and better.

Home town win for Western Lakes CC
Young Constaine Bartels in his first year racing scored the biggest result of his life by winning stage 1 of the Ballinrobe 2 day.
He and 15 others made full use of their handicap to hold of the fast galloping A and B riders by only 35 seconds.
On the climbs Mick Cosgrove of South Dublin CC proved strongest and holds the jersey by 3pts from Anthony Testa from West Coast Wheelers.
The Sprint competition the stage winner holds the jersey but has to pass it over to 2nd place rider Stephen Clancy of Cycling Pursuits Limerick by virtue of him holding the Yellow jersey.
Tomorrows stages will no doubt through up more surprises with a 8k TT in the morning and a 86k rolling road stage in the afternoon.
The Ballinrobe 2 day is sponsored by Marrey Bikes and Connemara fisheries
