WESTERN Lakes rider Dave Nugent triumphed in the Senior A category at the Connacht Road Racing Championships held in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon, on Sunday last.

Nugent’s time of 2.15.25 saw him storm home a minute and a half ahead of the chasing bunch, with Mark Quigley (Mayo Wheelers) and Emmet Hogan (Galway Bay C.C.) taking up second and third positions.

Nugent and Daragh O’Neill followed an early break by Dessie Woods and Mike Devins, and Simon Coughlan, Donamon, joined them to make it five at the front. Nugent jumped for home with a lap and a half of the ten-mile circuit to go, with Coughlan unlucky to puncture at a critical juncture. Nugent was never subsequently caught. This is Nugent’s fifth Connacht title.

MARTIN Munroe, Western Lakes Cycling Club, finished an excellent second in the U16 Race at the Coombes/Connor Memorial Race in Drogheda on Sunday.

Munroe, who is a member of the preliminary Irish panel for the Youth Olympics later this year, rode brilliantly to finish behind Maurice O’Brien, Kanturk, Co. Cork.

Alan Coyle, Shannonside Cycling Club, finished in third place. All three are chasing places on the Irish Youth Olympics team, which means that Martin’s performance was a great confidence-booster.

Brothers Padraig and Joe Marrey, also of Western Lakes, rode in the senior race.

WESTERN Lakes cyclist Martin Munroe made his international debut at the weekend, and he acquitted himself brilliantly – he was the first Irish rider home in the Tour of Sweden.

Munroe, who is preparing for the European Youth Olympics in Paris at the end of this month, finished 11th overall.

According to his coach Padraig Marrey, it was “a great introduction to riding at the highest level for Martin – and he showed that he can cope with it.”

He said: “Martin crashed on two days, but they were only minor crashes and he recovered well. He is improving all the time and making his international debut will bring him on still further.”

Martin lost time in the Team and Individual Time Trials, and also in the Prologue, but his performances over the four days kept him right in touch with the leaders.

MARTIN Munroe’s quest for a place on the Irish team for the European Youth Olympics reached fruition yesterday – and now he’s destined for this major sporting event in Paris from July 25th to August 2nd.

Western Lakes prodigy Munroe clinched his place with another excellent performance at the Corkman 3-day in Kanturk over the weekend.

And yesterday afternoon the good news was finally broken to him. “Three of us were called into a room, and told we were on the team,” said an ecstatic Munroe.

“It is brilliant to be going. I have been aiming for a place on this squad since being called into the preliminary panel, and I am delighted to be confirmed in the team now.

“I hope to do well in Paris now. It is a great honour to represent your country.”

Munroe, who has been cycling for just a year and a half, is coached by Western Lakes stalwart Padraig Marrey, who also coaches top professionals Mark Scanlon and David O’Loughlin.

“Martin is a great talent, and his attitude is excellent. He is very keen to do well in cycling, and this selection is a massive boost to him.

“It is also a great boost to cycling in the Western Lakes club and in Mayo in general. A lot of work has gone into promoting the sport in recent years, and Martin’s selection is a shot in the arm for all who are working so hard.”

Martin is a son of Padraig and Mary Munroe, Partry, both of whom are heavily involved in the sport of cycling, as are his two sisters Amy and Katie. He is a pupil of Ballinrobe Community School. Cycling News

National Championships

Enniskillen

Yesterday (Saturday) and Today

Martin Munroe of Western Lakes Cycling Club has won his first National title – the U16 title – a combined event comprising Time Trial, Road Race, and Criterium.

This is Martin’s first national title and follows his recent ride for Ireland in the European Youth Olympics in Paris.

Other good results for Connacht were:

Liam McNeill, Western Lakes Cycling Club, 2nd U12

Enda Scanlon, Sligo CC, 2nd U14

Elaine Cawley, Castlebar Cycling Club, 3rd U11

Western Lakes were also third in the U12 team competition – Liam McNeill, Brendan Butler, Felix Sproll and Alva Gill.

PADRAIG Marrey of Western Lakes Cycling Club was the winner of the Connacht Time Trial Championship, held in Claremorris recently.

Twenty-six riders went to the start and Padraig had 58.17 to spare over Jay Daly, Castlebar Cycling Club, who was penalised one minute for missing his starting slot.

Joint third were Des Foley, Eire Og Cycling Club, Sligo, and Cathal Keane, Galway Bay Cycling Club, on 1.01.36. Michael Devins, Eire Og Cycling Club, Sligo, was fifth on 1.02.52.

MARTIN Munroe, the Western Lakes cyclist who travels to Paris later this month to represent Ireland in the European Youth Olympics, claimed a silver medal in the All-Ireland U16 Championships in Athlone, on Saturday.

Munroe fought hard in a thrilling three-man finish at the end of a demanding course, and he was understandably delighted to have finished second behind Michael Murray from Clann Eireann, Ulster. Newry Wheelers cyclists Brian Henning finished third.

His preparations for the European Youth Olympics are going well, and this performance will be a great boost for him.

Western Lakes cyclists Richard Browne, Jason Joyce, William Connolly and Cathal Daly also took part with mixed results. Bicycle trouble caused problems for Joyce and Connolly, while Browne put up a good show in the U16 race. Daly, a promising newcomer, showed up well in the U14 race.
