Round Four of the club league will take place next Thursday June 11. Sign on from 7pm at the Garden centre on the West Road (Louisburgh) Westport racing starts at 7.30pm sharp. Refreshments afterwards in Mc McCarthy’s bar. Round 5 will now move to Caherlistrane for July 9th instead of Ballinrobe, more details to follow.

Ballinrobe 2 day

There will be an open meeting held next Thursday June 18th at 9pm at Inch’s bar. The club is looking for volunteers to help with the organisation of the event, it will be held on August 8th and 9th. If there are not enough volunteers willing to help the committee will have no option but to cancel the event.

BMX Summer fun

Ballinrobe’s BMX track remains a popular attraction to kids young and old around south Mayo. Kids from as young as five have been using the circuit since it came to the town last year.

In fact it is felt that starting at such a young age is beneficial for developing the skills for the sport, which is growing rapidly throughout Europe and around the world since it was introduced as a full Olympic sport in 2008.

Former Tour De France Director Jean Marie Lablanc as hailed the sport is the perfect introduction to all types of cycling and in Ballinrobe the track is well marshalled and maintained allowing for kids to really get a feel for BMX racing and the sport of cycling in general

Polka Dot Challenge

This year’s Polka Dot Challenge Cycle takes place on Sunday July 19 and interest is growing rapidly. The routes take in some of the tougher hills in south Mayo and north Galway and are broken into three specific levels to suit a wide range of cyclists starting with the 80km spin, then the 120 km and of course the 180km which includes all the big climbs.

On westernlakescc.com this week and in the lead up to the event itself you will be able to access a fully designed training programme catering for each event to help competitors get in shape for the gruelling but very manageable challenge.

The first focuses on the 80km spin with a strong focus on those of you who will be taking the bike from the shed for the first time in a long while and dusting off the cobwebs. Fitness wise, there are some useful tips and the technical issues are covered as well such as advise on if you will need a bike service etc. Log on and start training.
