Meet and Greet Night
Western Lakes CC will hold a meet and greet night for potential new members and current members next Wednesday April 1st at 8pm at Inch’s bar. The aim of the night is to provide information on the different types of cycling available and how best to get involved.
On the night, representatives from each section of the club will organise their own booth where new members and existing members can garner information on cycling in specific areas be it racing, youth cycling, leisure cycling, BMX and Mountain biking.
All club sponsors will be invited to attend and potential new members will be provided with starter pack, which will be available courtesy of Marrey Bikes.
The following representatives in charge of each specific area. In the area racing JJ Flaherty and Mark Quigley. For youth cycling Margaret Finnerty, Kathy Walsh and Gerry Butler will be on hand for information. Fergal O Neill and Tom Kelly will provide information on leisure cycles within the club and what is required to get involved.
One of the new ventures in the club last season was the BMX track, which is the first of it’s kind in the country. Gerry Butler will be on hand with information on the new track and what is required to get involved. Ladies cycling information will be available from Mary Mulchrone and Marie Fraser. While Padraig Marrey will provide all the information needed for those interested in Mountain Biking.
Church Gate Collection
The club would like to thank all the people who volunteered and supported the church gate collection last weekend.
Mizen to Malin Bid - Western Lakes CC riders make squad.
A total of eleven riders from the club are now on the squad attempting to break 20hrs barrier for the 590kms of non stop cycle from Mizen Head to Malin head. The total squad has 23 riders which highlights the superb representation from the Western Lakes club.
Most of the eleven riders only took up the sport in the last 18months which shows how fast they have progressed. The group have a tough training regime to follow over the next three months, so here hoping they all make it.
The group will be fund raising for the Rock Rose house, Mayo cancer support charity. Please support them on the bid which takes place on June 26th and 27th . The cyclists who have done the club proud to gain selection are Mary Mulchrone, Gerard Kyne, Constance Bartels, John Murphy, Bernard Gereathy, Joseph Marrey, Michael Moran, John Conroy, Padraig Gannon, Gabriel Coen and Padraig Marrey
BMX Track
Anyone who has some free time on their hands could help with the maintenance work up at the BMX track, Gerry Butler and Joseph Marrey will be there over the next few weeks, contact Gerry regarding jobs to be done. We suggest you think of it as doing some gardening, plus you are helping with a very worth while project for youth cycling. No experience needed just willingness to work.
Meanwhile on June 13th the club plans to hold an BMX Track open day with a a full day of competition for adult and youth riders, the idea is the attract the top BMX riders to Ballinrobe while also promoting the track nationally
Roller Marathon
The club is holding Fund raising roller marathon on Easter Saturday, Mary Hughes is looking into organising a permit for the Easter weekend, she has requested help from the committee and members.
Members Registered
To date the club has 62 cyclists Affiliated to Cycling Ireland, there are still a number of members who have yet to register, so come on guys get your insurance details sorted.
Mayo and Club League
The first round of the Mayo league starts on Sunday April 5th it’s an open Handicap event over 30miles of the Srah circuit, sign on from 10am at the Partry hall, race start at Srah school at 10.30am.
The eagerly awaited club league promoted by both Western Lakes CC and Covey Wheelers will take place on April 16th with a 10mile Time Trial, This league is open to all abilities and genders, even youth riders get to race against their senior counterparts. The league runs on a H/cap / Personal best Basis so everyone has a chance of winning either on the night or the overall. See club web for updates, link is on the top of the page on the browser.
Sign on and full league payment will take place from 6pm outside the Graveyard on the Ballyglass road Ballinrobe. First rider off at 7pm sharp, refreshments afterwards at Inch’s bar Main St.

On the Road
Leisure and recreational cyclists meet every Sunday morning at 9.45am for spins, all abilities welcome, spin leaves the Cornmarket at 10am sharp. Youth riders are catered for on Saturday morning at 10am from the Cycling centre
BMX sessions take place on Sunday’s from 10.30am at the cycling centre and on Monday evenings from April 14. Racers meet up on Tuesday and Thursday evening from April 7 at 6.30pm from the Cornmarket.
