Special Participation Grant Scheme 2009

The Sports Partnership would like to thank all groups / organizations who submitted applications under this years scheme which closed on the 1st May. Many applications were received and are currently being vetted by the Partnership and a decision will be announced by the board very shortly. Despite the financial uncertainty which surrounds all organizations in the current climate the Partnership has decided to set aside a total of 15,000 Euro for the purpose of this funding scheme. Many worthwhile community projects will receive a little assistance through this scheme which has the aim of increasing participation in sport and recreation in Mayo. Please keep an eye in the local press or log on to www.mayosports.ie for information on the successful applications.

Final Meeting of the current Mayo Sports Partnership Board

As a body under the auspices of the County Development Board in Mayo County Council the current Sports Partnership Board is to dissolve as a result of looming elections. In the last 4 and a half years, during which they oversaw the successful evolvement of the Partnership, the board has made a huge contribution to the sustainable development of sport in the county. Under the Chairmanship of Pat Stanton from Mayo VEC the board published the first strategy for sport & recreation in the county and has delivered a large majority of the actions within the plan. One of the first tasks for the incoming board will be to develop a second strategy and bring the Partnership forward on to its next stage. It is planned to hold elections from the Sports Forum to the next board in September so please watch this space for more details.

It also continues in Ballina, Swinford and Westport every Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Athletics Track in Horkans Hill. All newcomers more than welcome. The group is going from strength to strength and is really enjoying this fun way of training. It’s a fantastic way of getting fitter, feeling better and healthier and even loosing the odd pound. It is also an excellent way to meet people who have an interest in walking or running. There is only a once off charge for insurance which is €20.00 and after that is absolutely free of charge. There will be leaders available to give advice and help. You can dip in and out as you wish. You don’t have to come each week if it doesn’t suit. The programme is designed to suit everyone. Why not give it a try this Thursday….

Don’t forget to bring water and wear comfortable running shoes. Here is an ideal opportunity for those ladies training for the mini marathon to get a bit of extra training in with others…
