IRISH cyclist Padraig Marrey (Western Lakes CC) scored a major international win when he won the Berne Grand Prix yesterday (Sunday.)

Marrey, who is in Switzerland to undergo a three-month coaching course, came home first of 240 starters to record the biggest win of his career.

Marrey (31) rode splendidly to take the title over 120km. “It was a hilly course, but I felt good all through and I am absolutely delighted with my victory,” said Marrey.

Last weekend, Marrey finished second in the Masters category of a big race in Geneva.

“I have been doing a lot of training here as part of the coaching course, and it is standing to me.”

Marrey, a full-time employee of Cycling Ireland, coached Mark Scanlon to win the World Junior title in 1998, and he is still Scanlon’s coach.
