Training Routes in the south Mayo area

Route 1 : Start in Ballinrobe _ Ballygarries crossroads turn right cycle along for about 1 mile turn right again this will bring you up the bog road straight back in by Cloongowla to Abbey ST in Ballinrobe Distance : 10miles

Also along this route you have the option of taking in shorter distances so this is an excellent spin to start off on as the roads are quite also

10MPH –60mins , 12MPH–50mins , 15 MPH – 40mins , 18MPH – 33mins , 20MPH – 30mins ,, 22MPH – 27mins ,,, 25mph – 24mins ,,This an ideal course for beginners


Route 2 : start in Ballinrobe – Kilmaine where you turn left b4 garda station and onto Roundfort here you turn left Left again onto Hollymount and turning left to Ballinrobe

Distance 15miles This course has a few inclines which demands a bit more energy a gud stepping stone to building fitness 10mph – 90mins , 12mph – 75mins ,, 15mph– 60mins 18mph – 50mins , 20mph – 45mins ,, 22mph – 42mins ,, 25miles mph – 40mins

Route 3 :start in Ballinrobe –Cong –onto to Clonbur turning right at Ballycoyne and into Ballinrobe , Distance 17 miles this one is similar to the course above but with added traffic to test your bike handling ability,,, 10mph – 1hr 42mins , 12mph – 1hr 25mins 15mph – 1hr 8mins , 18mph– 57mins , 20mph – 51mins ,22mph– 46mins 25mph – 41mins

Route 4: start in Ballinrobe – Ballyglass – turning right at the post office(Ballyglass) and onto Robeen crossroads where you can go straight on to Ballinrobe Distance 20 miles

10mph –2hrs , 12mph– 1hr 40min , 15mph – 1hr 20mins , 18mph –1hr 7mins

20mph – one hour , 22mph – 54mins ,, 25 mph –48mins

Route : 5 start in Ballinrobe –Ballintubber turn right – Ballintubber abbey – Carnacon-

-Moorehall – Ballygarries turn right – Ballinrobe , Distance 25miles ,, 10mph 2.5hrs 12mph- 2hrs 5mins , 15mph– 1hr 40mins , 18mph –1hr 22mins , 20mph –1hr 15mins 22mph- 1hr 8mins ,, 25mph –one hour

Route 6: start in Ballinrobe – Partry turn left at Garda station onto Tourmakeady – Maamtransa turn left – back to finny – Clonbur to finish in Ballinrobe

 Distance : 39 miles at this stage we are moving up the gears with this course as the road rises up to meet you that bit more , you stepped up a notch here

 Good Course ,, 10mph –3hrs 54mins , 12mph – 3hrs15mins , 15mph – 2hrs 36mins

18mph – 2hrs 10mins , 20mph – 1hr57mins , 22 mph – 1hr 45mins , 25mph – 1hr 33mins

Route 7 : Start in Ballinrobe – Claremorris – Castlebar- to finish back in Ballinrobe

Distance : 50 miles ,, 10mph – 5hrs , 12mph – 4hrs 10mins , 15mph – 3hrs 20mins

18mph – 2hrs 46mins , 20mph – 2hrs 30mins ,, 22mph – 2hrs 16mins ,, 25mph –2hrs



Route 8; Start in Ballinrobe – Castlebar- Newport –Westport – and onto Ballinrobe

Distance ; 58 miles ,, 10mph – 5hrs 48mins,, 12mph – 4hrs 50mins ,, 15mph – 3hrs 51mins ,, 18mph- 3hrs 14mins ,, 20mph- 2hrs 54mins ,, 22mph- 2hrs 38mins ,,

25mph – 2hrs 18mins

Route 9: start in Ballinrobe – Westport – leenane turn left onto maam – corr na mona –

Clonbur – Ballinrobe : Distance 72 miles here we see some of the most spectular scenery in the country , has some challenging sections but has to be said one of the most rewarding cycles you’ll do ,,, 10m’hr – 7hrs 12mind , 12m/hr – 6hrs 15m/hr 4hrs 48mins ,, 18m/hr – 4hrs ,, 20m/hr –3hrs 36mins ,,, 22m/hr – 3hrs 17mins ,, 25m/hr – 2hrs-53mins

Route 10; Start in Ballinrobe –Galway –Moycullen –turn right in Maam cross –turn right again Maam onto Corr Na Mona –Clonbur –Ballinrobe : Distance 85 miles

This cycle can also be done as part of the Croi cycle held on the 22nd of May.

This is an old classic for the racing cyclist as part of there endurance training

10m/hr – 8hrs 30mins ,, 12m/hrs – 7hrs 5mins ,, 15m/hr – 5hrs 40mins ,, 18m/hr- 4hrs 45mins ,, 20m/hr – 4hrs 15mins ,, 22m/hr – 3hrs 52mins ,,, 25m/hr – 3hrs 24mins

 When you finish these cycles you are fit enough to participate in any leisure cycle no matter how hard it is in this country

 Also keep in mind you will have to allow for a tea, coffee break along these routes

Which is up to each Individual, we recommend not stopping any longer than 15mins

because you can very easily get Cold, so common sense prevails

Remember to carry spares.

Tube, pump, food, rain cape or gillet and a Map if necessary
