Western Lakes’ cyclist William Connolly has narrowly missed out on his bid to represent Ireland in the European Youth Olympics in Italy this summer.

But he has been included as one of two reserves on the three-man team and will considered if, for any reason, the three youths selected are unable to travel.

Ballinrobe youth William (15) put in some great performances in recent weeks in an effort to secure his place and he has come up just tantalisingly short. The team selected was Chris Jennsen (Sorrento), Geoff O’Hanlon (Clonmel), and Denis Dunworth (Killorglin.) The other reserve is Thomas Martin (Clann Eireann.)

Two years ago, another Western Lakes’ cyclist Martin Munroe rode in the European Youth Olympics in Paris, and he has gone on to represent Ireland on many occasions since.

It is hoped that William, a very dedicated cyclist, will earn an international place in the very near future.

At the weekend, Padraig Marrey (Western Lakes) completed the FBD Ras despite picking up a shoulder injury during the week.

It was a tough week’s riding but Padraig, the full-time Coaching Officer of Cycling Ireland, acquitted himself well.

Two young Western Lakes’ cyclists put in great performances in the series of under-age races held in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, over the weekend.

Stephen Burke finished 3rd in the U10 race, while colleague Frank Finnerty was just one place behind him in fourth. Cyclists from all over Ireland took part
