Western Lakes Cyclists to the fore
The cycling season has only just started in Mayo and already Western Lakes CC cyclists have got results in the 4 races to date.
The Mayo league got the cycling season underway last Sunday the 14th of March with a 75k handicap race in Ballinrobe, a big field signed on, with 66 riders taking to the start line, split into 4 groups based on ability with the strongest riders having to overcome a handicap of 16 minutes.
In the sprint to the line outside the Race course Ballinrobe, Joe Marrey of Western Lakes CC won the bunch gallop taking his first win of the season in fine style, Gerhard Hack also of Western Lakes was 5th.
The club had 13 racers cyclists taking part showing how strong the club has become as a racing club.
On Wednesday the action was in Westport for Ras Mayo, again a handicap separated the 75rider field which was split into 3 groups but the handicap didn't stop Padraig Marrey from squeezing into the prizes with a good 6th place. JJ Flaherty also had a good showing as he was part of the main break of the day only fading towards the end
On Saturday the Eire Og CC Sligo promoted 2 races, in the Markicivez Cup held over 100k, Padraig Marrey showed fine form to be part of the main break all day and finishing it with 4th place in the sprint to the line.
In the A4 cat race Brendan Scullion showed he has potential as a senior racer with a fine 3rd place, against much more experienced opposition.
Alsp on Saturday In the Ciclosport GP Tyrone, Brian Martin had one of his best results with 3rd place in a mass bunch gallop in the A 4 race, Brain was away on his own in the last lap of the race but was hauled back by the bunch, he did very well to get placed.
On Sunday Eire Og promoted the Mooney cup over 80k again the Western Lakes CC team of Joe Marrey, Willy Connolly, John Murphy and Gerhard Hack showed their strength covering most of the moves, in the end the race ended up in a bunch sprint with Gerhard Hack crossing the line in a fine 3rd place.
Club League
On Thursday the 25th of March the 1st Round of the Western Lakes/Westport cycling club league takes place.
Sign on from 5.15pm on the Ballyglass road Ballinrobe for a 10mile Time Trial, first rider off 6pm.
This league is especially suited to beginners or anyone who wants to take up cycling, so why not come and give it a go.
Refreshments afterwards at Inches bar Main St Ballinrobe.
